Welcome to FungiProduct — a small corner of the internet devoted to a field with unusually large possibilities.
I’m Chris Willems, a Belgian business development economist with more than thirty years of experience helping start-ups and technology-driven companies turn ideas into marketable propositions. Throughout my career, I have worked where technology meets strategy, communication, funding and sales.
The sectors changed, but the central question did not: how does a promising innovation become a credible business?
Why FungiProduct?
My interest in fungi began with surprise. Like many people, I once associated them mainly with mushrooms and childhood tales. Then I discovered the extraordinary range of research and commercial experimentation surrounding mycelium — the branching network of microscopic threads that forms the living body of many fungi.
Mycelium and fungi are being explored for applications in packaging, construction materials, textiles, food, agriculture and many other fields. Some products have already reached the market. Others remain at the research, prototype or pilot-production stage and still face challenges involving performance, regulation, pricing and industrial scale.
That distinction matters.
FungiProduct exists to follow the distance between possibility and commercial reality. It is an independent English-language platform examining emerging products, companies, technologies and market developments within the fungi and mycelium economy.
The existing archive records earlier phases in this rapidly evolving field. Rather than rewriting the past, I will publish new articles when developments deserve a fresh assessment. The weekly FungiProduct updates will distinguish as clearly as possible between scientific research, announced ambitions, pilot projects and products that customers can actually buy.
A Commercial Perspective
I do not approach this field from a laboratory bench. My contribution is business development.
I ask the commercial questions that inevitably follow technological discovery:
What problem does the product solve?
Who is the customer?
Can it be produced consistently and at a competitive price?
Which regulations apply?
How can it reach the market?
And which partners are needed to move from an attractive prototype to a viable business?
The scientific work belongs to researchers, engineers and producers. My role is to understand their work responsibly, explain its commercial relevance and connect promising innovations with market realities.
Where a genuine commercial fit exists, the knowledge developed through FungiProduct may also support selective assignments through Tulip.Connection, particularly for American companies exploring opportunities in Belgium and the Netherlands.
From Technology to Market
My career began with tailored software applications for mid-sized companies in sectors including food, automotive, transport, medical and legal services.
As communication technology evolved, I moved into interactive corporate communication, online marketing and technology-driven business development. Across more than three decades, I have worked on market strategy, positioning, sales and funding for start-ups and innovative companies.
That experience taught me to remain enthusiastic about innovation without losing sight of execution. A compelling idea attracts attention; a credible route to the customer creates a business.
My life and work connect Belgium, Türkiye and the United States, giving FungiProduct a naturally international and transatlantic perspective.
Beyond Business
There is, fortunately, more to life than technology, markets and start-ups.
Art remains an infinite source of inspiration to me. Museums, historic architecture, books, good food and wine, long walks and the occasional quiet bistro restore the curiosity that business sometimes exhausts.
The Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and James Ensor remain recurring companions. They remind me that innovation often begins with something deceptively simple: seeing the familiar world from a different perspective.
That same curiosity brought me to fungi and mycelium.
An Invitation
FungiProduct is not a scientific journal, an online shop or a catalogue of miracles. It is a platform for informed curiosity, commercial realism and constructive connections.
If you are developing a fungi- or mycelium-based product, researching a new application, considering entry into the Benelux market or simply following this fascinating sector, you are warmly invited to read, question, comment and get in touch.
Welcome to FungiProduct.
